MIT and Smith have both cancelled fall sports in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, making it four NEWMAC programs that will spend the 2020 season away from the field.
They join Mount Holyoke and Wellesley as NEWMACs who deemed soccer untenable for health and safety reasons, while four NESCACs have made similar decisions, including Amherst and Williams.
MIT’s campus in Cambridge, Mass., will only include seniors and others with extenuating circumstances, while Smith’s one in Northampton, Mass., is hosting freshman and sophomores this fall. Both decisions make it impossible to field a full team.
