One look at the scoreline might suggest that UMass got played off the pitch Sunday afternoon against Penn State.
A 4-1 defeat in the NCAA tournament’s second round isn’t too flattering, as it cut short the Atlantic 10 program’s stay in the North Carolina bubble-like environment.
But the Minutemen (7W-2L-3D) actually held a 14-9 shots advantage, especially testing goalkeeper Kris Shakes in the second half. The Nittany Lions (9W-1L-2D) just had more quality in front of goal and held a 3-0 lead by halftime, setting the game's course.
