New England Revolution Academy teams were in action last weekend at the MLS NEXT Flex tournament in Boyds, Md.
The U-15s, U-17s and U-19s all competed in the event, as clubs in each of the four age groups qualified for MLS NEXT Flex on a points-per-game basis in each of MLS NEXT’s eight divisions. Qualifying clubs were assigned into 16 groups of four via a draw in the month of April, and the champions of each of those groups automatically qualified for the MLS NEXT Cup Playoffs, which begin next month.
The Revolution Academy U-15s cruised through their group, recording two wins and a tie. Their wins both came via clean sheets over RSL Arizona and Miami Kendall Rush SC by scores of 3-0 and 4-0, respectively. The U-15s took Houston Dynamo to a 1-1 tie, before winning the penalty shootout with the 13th shooter of the match. The U-15s have now earned a guaranteed spot in the MLS NEXT Cup Playoffs in Frisco, Texas at the Toyota Soccer Center from June 25 to July 3.
The U-19s went 2-1-0 in the tournament, delivering a 1-0 shutout of Shattuck-St. Mary’s and notching a 3-1 win over Real JFC. The U-17s went 1-1-1 in their competition, beating FC Cincinnati, 2-1, and tying 2-2 with Tampa Bay United.
