The Division 1 men’s college soccer landscape in New England could soon look drastically different, with April bringing about a long-awaited NCAA vote that would change the calendar format.
The proposal, dubbed the 21st Century Model, has been spearheaded by Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski and would be implemented in 2022 if passed.
Instead of competing from late August through the College Cup in early December, the season would be split across the fall and spring, making D1 men’s soccer a year-round sport. Teams would have 23 games instead of 25, postseason play would move to May/June and the current spring format with five scrimmages would cease to exist.
