The historic Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is poised to return in 2021, but it might not include any teams from New England.
One year after the tournament was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, only 16 teams will participate in this year’s edition across four rounds. Further, U.S. Soccer’s Open Cup Committee will review plans by April 19 to confirm whether the tournament even gets underway May 18-19 for its 107th edition.
The Open Cup Committee has decided not to conduct the opening round, eliminating opportunities for nearly 84 percent of the 101 professional and semi-professional men’s clubs that were eligible.
