Last month, New England Soccer Journal reported that Loomis Chaffee Class of 2022 forward and Michigan commit Oliver Martin (Williston, Vt.) was signed by Vermont Green FC as the brand new club’s first-ever player.
Since then, the roster has continued to take shape and fill out. Among the group that the team has added over the past month, is a significant contingent of college players with New England ties. The club will also hold a final open tryout on April 10.
Vermont Green FC was officially announced as a USL League Two club on Oct. 12, 2021, and will play home games at the University of Vermont’s Virtue Field. The USL League Two regular season runs from early-May to mid-July. Each team plays a 14-match schedule against their divisional opponents, seven at home and seven away. The playoffs take place in late July, with each conference champion advancing to the national semifinals and the winners of those matches advancing to the League Two Championship in early August. Vermont will compete in the Northeast Division.
As a pre-professional team, Vermont Green FC head coach and sporting director Adam Pfeifer told New England Soccer Journal that the franchise hopes to build a roster around high-level collegiate players who have professional aspirations. Clearly, that will involve a distinct New England flavor.
