FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Growing up in Groton, Mass., Revolution II midfielder Malcolm Fry was unsure how he would fare on the soccer field against outside competition.
Then, Fry’s family relocated to Montpellier, France, and he got his answer.
"I played Town soccer my whole life, but my family’s not a soccer family," Fry said. "My parents are both athletes, but not soccer. My dad’s an English teacher and one day the son of a colleague of my dad’s was playing for FC Stars, and my dad was, like, you want to go for a tryout? I was a little overwhelmed in the beginning, but ended up saying yes, and the rest is history. I was nine or 10 and I had played a lot but not super-organized, mostly just on campus (Groton School) and it was hard to compare when you’re just playing against the rest of the faculty’s children."
