When it comes to prep school athletics, Putnam Science Academy in Putnam, Conn., is most recognized for its basketball program. The Mustangs, coached by Thomas Espinosa, won the 2018 national prep championship and routinely send players off to Division 1 schools.

It’s a high standard for the soccer program to meet, but one they have within their sights.

“Putnam, as a school, has had a tradition of being international-heavy,” head coach Sam DeMello said. “It has a very, very strong basketball team, so there’s an allegiance to sports. It seemed like a natural transition into a high-end soccer program.”
