Last fall, when it was decided that Nick Woodruff would redshirt his first season at Michigan State, he could have easily gone into cruise control.
That’s a decision Spartans’ head coach Damon Rensing said he’s often seen in Division 1 college soccer. With senior captain Jimmy Fiscus and then-sophomore Michael Wetungu locked in at center back, minutes would simply be hard to come by.
But settling into relaxation mode – when practices become methodical and players go through the paces – was never acceptable for Woodruff, an Attleboro, Mass., native.
