New England Revolution head coach/sporting director Bruce Arena and D.C. United head coach Ben Olsen go way back, stretching to their University of Virginia days in the mid 1990s.
To say they hold mutual respect for each other would be an understatement, with Olsen the second-longest tenured MLS head coach and Arena second in wins behind the late Sigi Schmid.
“He lived in my home his first year with D.C. United,” Arena said. “So, we have a long history together. He’s an outstanding person, was a great player, and if it wasn’t for the injury he suffered playing in England for Nottingham Forest, he would’ve had an outstanding national team career as well.”
