UMass had to wait longer than anticipated, but its first game of the spring Division I men’s soccer season still produced a strong result.

Behind second-half goals from transfers Ben Shepherd and Filippo Begliardi Ghidini, the Minutemen (1-0) opened with a 2-0 road victory Wednesday night against Northeastern at Parsons Field.

The game was originally supposed to be played at the FC Stars Complex in Lancaster, Mass., but a late change in plans shifted proceedings to Northeastern’s (0-1) turf field in Brookline, Mass.
