Bruce Arena believes he can get the New England Revolution into the MLS playoffs, which have expanded to seven teams per conference in 2019. But the club’s new sporting director and head coach knows he also needs to manage expectations.

The Revolution have compiled a 2-0-3 league record Brad Friedel was dismissed in early May, escaping the Eastern Conference cellar and pulling within five points of a playoff place. New England has not trailed across that span.

But they also squandered the lead in the late going during a 1-1 home draw with the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday – as they had in their previous home game, when D.C. United’s Wayne Rooney equalized with a 90th-minute penalty kick in a 1-1 draw May 25.
