Like any college soccer player, Joe Mepham (Sudbury, Mass.) hoped to maintain form and fitness this summer. After all, he’s looking to hit the ground running in 2023, as Endicott College chases its first NCAA Tournament trip and Commonwealth Coast Conference title since 2017.
That quest led the junior midfielder/forward and captain to USL League Two side Mississippi Brilla, shortly removed from a study abroad semester in Ireland. Plans originally came together when ex-Gordon College coach Matt Horth encouraged Mepham to consider the option. Horth had long coached the Brilla before pursuing a new opportunity.
Now, as the Gulls prepare for another Division 3 season, they are primed to benefit from all Mepham absorbed during his extended time in the Deep South -- both on and off the field. The experience also provides a window into Mepham’s contagious work ethic and commitment levels, carrying no fear when entering the USL2’s summertime structure that’s ripe with Division 1 players.
