After Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Vermont, Merrimack women’s soccer head coach Gabe Mejail couldn’t help but hear the loud chants.
"There was a big tailgate -- it was our first home game so that’s normally something. The game ends, and I thought that was it, and then everybody started chanting 'Gabe! Gabe! Gabe!' I’m thinking, 'oh my god, I’m so embarrassed,'" recalled Mejail. "But I got all choked up and the girls came over and all hugged me, the alums came over to the field. It was really, really exciting."
So, what was all the celebratory commotion about?
Well, Mejail had just made history.
