Around the Region: CONCACAF cancellation interrupts local products’ World Cup hopes

FC Stars of Massachusetts standouts Michaela Agresti (Swampscott, Mass.) and Payton Linnehan (Douglas, Mass.) placed their club commitments on hold to chase the ultimate prize: a place at the World Cup.

Agresti and Linnehan both featured on the U.S. under-17 national team roster for the 2018 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship in Nicaragua last month, but their World Cup quest halted unexpectedly during the proceedings.

Political instability in the host nation prompted CONCACAF to cancel the tournament after one round and postpone the qualifying process to dole out the three available berths for the 2018 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay.
