An educated guess about which professional team has the longest winning streak in U.S. soccer history might take into consideration D.C. United, the New York Cosmos or U.S. Open Cup legends Fall River Marksmen. All would be incorrect, however, as Phoenix Rising FC has established the mark with 17 consecutive victories in the USL Championship this season.

Phoenix (19-2-5, 62 points) also claims another best this season so far, bumping MLS Supporters’ Shield leaders LAFC’s goal differential by two. It will take a plus-46 margin into Sunday’s game against San Antonio FC.

Phoenix’s ascent began three years ago, when Boston College graduate Berke Bakay took over as majority owner. The team then built soccer-specific Casino Arizona Field.
