Dylan Maxon knew joining Oakwood for the 2016-17 season would require some sacrifices.
The obvious one? The two-and-half hour drive from his hometown of Clifton Park, N.Y., to the club’s fields in Glastonbury, Conn. He grew up playing for Albany Alleycats, but long felt a jump to the Development Academy was necessary to realize his college soccer dreams.
“I knew I had to do something like this in order to get the recruiting I wanted and be seen as a player,” Maxon said. “Where I’m from, there are no academies.”
That lengthy commute – homework in the car, not seeing friends as much, etc. – was validated earlier this week, with the 17-year-old midfielder verbally committing to the University of New Hampshire.
